Stone Temple Pilots, often shortened to STP, are one of the bestselling and most popular rock bands of the 1990s. The’ve sold over 40 million records during their career. The group achieved sixteen Top 10 singles on various Billboard rock charts and scored a #1 album with Purple. Their sound originated as alternative rock and grunge but evolved over the years. The band’s popularity and exciting live shows led to a devoted fanbase. They’re recognized as one of the most influential bands of their era, despite poor critical reviews during their height. STP’s music has stood the test of time and earned them retrospective critical acclaim.
The band formed in San Diego between 1985-1990. The original lineup consisted of lead singer Scott Wieland, guitarists Dean DeLeo, his brother and bassist Robert DeLeo, and drummer Eric Kretz. They released their first album Core in 1990. Powered by the singles “Sex Type Thing,” “Plush,” and “Creep,” the album was a major hit, launching them to stardom. They toured extensively following the album and became one of the more popular rock acts during that time.
They released their second album, Purple, in June of 1994. It featured the radio-friendly “Interstate Love Song,” “Vasoline” and “Big Empty.” Album sales took off as it debuted at the top of the Billboard 200. Purple sold over three million copies in just four months, making it one of the fastest selling albums in history. It eventually hit over six million sales, becoming certified 6x platinum. While they achieved success with later albums, this era was the height of their career.
Their third album, Tiny Music…Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop (1996), saw a major shift in sound for the band. It incorporated glam metal, psychedelic rock and post-punk sounds. With their next album, No 4 (1998), STP wanted to get back to their earlier alt rock sound. The hit single “Sour Girl” featured a popular music video starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, which is available in the AMI digital library.
Around the time of their fifth album, Shanri-La Dee Da (2001), internal strife began to take its toll on the band. STP dissolved in 2002 due to tensions between Dean DeLeo and Scott Weiland. After reconciling years later, STP reunited in 2008 and toured for several years before releasing their self-titled sixth album in 2010. Despite the album’s success, conflict continued to plague the group. Scott Weiland was fired from the band in 2013. Chester Bennington took over for a time but left in 2015 to focus on Linkin Park. Tragically, Weiland passed in 2016. After an online audition, STP hired Jeff Gutt as the new lead singer in 2017. They released their second self-titled album, and seventh overall, in 2018.
