07 May New AMI Contest Honors British Punk Pioneer, Joe Strummer
– Prize includes a t-shirt, bandana, and Assembly on CD and vinyl.
AMI’s newest giveaway honors the late, great Joe Strummer. One fan will win a Strummer t-shirt, bandana, and the new collection of his solo material, Assembly, on both CD and vinyl. The contest is open May 7, 2021 through May 19, 2021. Music fans can enter the contest using the AMI Music app, available on iOS and Android. Contest entry is also available on any participating AMI Jukebox.
Born John Graham Mellor, Strummer got his stage name from his days strumming his ukulele for passersby on the streets of London. In his early twenties, after playing a show with his band, The 101ers, Strummer was approached by singer/songwriter Mick Jones and music manager Bernie Rhodes about forming a new band with bassist Paul Simonon, drummer Terry Chimes, and guitarist Keith Levene. This new band, known as the Clash, made their onstage debut in 1976, as the opening act for the Sex Pistols.
After a decade of success with the Clash, Strummer set out on a solo career doing soundtrack work, acting in films, producing an album for the Pogues and touring with them after Shane MacGowan’s departure, and lending his songwriting talents to various bands including Mick Jones’s new venture, Big Audio Dynamite. By the late 1990s, Strummer was playing shows with new backing musicians, the Mescaleros. Their final gig was November 22, 2002. One month later, Strummer died suddenly from an undiagnosed congenital heart defect at his home in Somerset, England. His legacy lives on through his music.
Assembly, which was released in March 2021, is a compilation of the best of Strummer’s solo career and his work with the Mescaleros, including “Cover Girl,” “Johnny Appleseed,” a cover of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song,” and “Love Kills” from the Sid and Nancy soundtrack. Also included on the 16-track album are three previously unreleased live performances: the Clash’s “I Fought the Law” and “Rudie Can’t Fail,” as well as an acoustic rendition of “Junco Partner.”
AMI is proud to offer this giveaway to fans of Joe Strummer. All are encouraged to enter the contest using the AMI Music app or by visiting a nearby AMI jukebox venue.
