Born in Memphis and raised in Detroit, Aretha Franklin got her start singing gospel hymns in the churches where her father was minister. Her first record deal came at the age of 18, when she signed to Columbia Records and her star continued to rise. Throughout her career, which spanned nearly six decades, Franklin had a staggering 112 charted singles on Billboard and has sold more that 75 million records worldwide. In 1987, she became the first female performer inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2008 Rolling Stone named her the #1 Greatest Singer of All Time. The list of contemporary artists that Franklin inspired is endless. R&B singer Mary J. Blige said that “Aretha is a gift from God. When it comes to expressing yourself through song, there is no one who can touch her. She is the reason why women want to sing. Aretha has everything—the power, the technique. She is honest with everything she says.”
This new career-spanning box set is available in a 4-CD and digital collection featuring 81 tracks, including 19 previously unreleased alternate versions, demos, rarities, and live performances, and a 2-LP highlights version. From her start with 1956’s “Never Grow Old” to what some have said is one of her most memorable performances—her rendition of “(You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman” from 2015’s 38th Annual Kennedy Center Honors tribute to Carole King. The box set also comes with a booklet containing sleeve notes by author and director of arts and culture for the City of Detroit, Rochelle Riley, and David Nathan, a music journalist and soul historian who interviewed Franklin more times than any other living writer.
AMI is proud to offer a chance at winning this wonderful prize, highlighting one of the greatest singers of the last century. For a limited time, AMI jukeboxes will also be featuring an Aretha Franklin playlist packed with the biggest hits of her career. All are encouraged to check out the playlist and enter the contest using the AMI Music app or by visiting a nearby AMI jukebox venue.
