Formed in Chelsea, England in June, 1975 by frontman Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister. Having just been dismissed from the space-rock outfit Hawkwind, Lemmy sought to create a music experience that was louder, faster, and more unruly than anything he had done previously. He recruited guitarist Larry Wallis and drummer Lucas Fox and Motörhead was born. After only a few practices and a handful of live gigs, the band was invited to open for Blue Öyster Cult at London’s famed Hammersmith Odeon.
During that first year, Fox was replaced by drummer Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor and Wallis was then replaced by guitarist “Fast” Eddie Clark. This threesome of Lemmy, Taylor, and Clark would be the band’s lineup from 1976-1982, and the trio that fans would consider “classic” Motörhead.
After four years of repeated touring and recording, the band released their best-selling album to date. The iconic Ace of Spades entered the UK charts in November, 1980 and went all the way to #4. It was the band’s first (but not last) album to be certified Gold. The title track was also their only Gold single and would go on to be synonymous with Lemmy and Motörhead.
In the years that followed, there were tours, albums, live album, videos, lineup changes, more tours and even a Grammy award in 2005 for their cover of Metallica’s “Whiplash” on Metallic Attack: The Ultimate Tribute. Lemmy was unsurprisingly and characteristically disenchanted with the honor. After battling health problems, Lemmy Kilmister passed away in his Los Angeles apartment from prostate cancer and congestive heart failure, four days after his 70th birthday, on December 28, 2015. It was the end of an era and without their iconic founder, Motörhead was also laid to rest.
AMI is proud to offer this giveaway to fans of Motörhead. For a limited time, AMI jukeboxes will also be featuring a Motörhead playlist that highlights their biggest hits throughout the years. All are encouraged to check out the playlist and enter the contest using the AMI Music app or by visiting a nearby AMI jukebox venue.
