Formed in Birmingham, England in 1978 by keyboardist Nick Rhodes and bassist John Taylor, Duran Duran was an integral part of the burgeoning New Romantic music subculture. They hit their stride in 1980 when they added drummer Roger Taylor, guitarist Andy Taylor, and singer Simon LeBon. The group became a frontrunner in the second British Invasion which was fueled by heavy rotation on MTV and national Top-40 radio stations. Setting them at the head of the pack was a collection of groundbreaking music videos, in the band’s signature style–shot on 35mm film to give a polished, elevated look when compared to other videos of the time. A string of hits, including “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Rio,” “The Reflex,” and “Girls on Film” cemented the band’s reputation as one of the hottest acts of the 1980s.

Lineup changes and a lull in momentum during the 1990s were turned around in 2001 when Duran Duran reunited and embarked on multiple successful world tours. Despite any setbacks, they have never stopped making music. In total, they have recorded 15 studio albums, including 1997’s Medazzaland which was only released in North America, Latin America, and Japan. This year marks its 25th anniversary and the first official European release of the album. Notable songs include the title track, which is the first to feature Nick Rhodes on lead vocals instead of Simon LeBon, “So Long Suicide,” a song written as a reaction to the death of Kurt Cobain, and “Michael, You’ve Got a Lot to Answer For” which was written for INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, who passed away a month after the album’s original release. The reissue also showcases cover art by Andrew Day, in an homage to American illustrator Patrick Nagel, who painted the iconic image used for the cover of 1982’s Rio.

This year also marks Duran Duran’s induction the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band was the overwhelming winner in the Official Fan Vote, surpassing other legendary artists such as Dolly Parton, Eminem, and Pat Benatar. AMI is proud to offer fans the chance at winning this Duran Duran prize pack. For a limited time, AMI jukeboxes will also be featuring a playlist of their greatest hits throughout the years. Everyone is encouraged to check out the playlist and US residents may enter the contest using the AMI Music app or by visiting a nearby AMI jukebox venue.
