Sully Erna, along with bassist Robbie Merrill formed Godsmack in Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1995. Erna made the switch from drummer to singer and guitarist and added friends Lee Richards on lead guitar and Tommy Stewart on drums. A year later, Richards was replaced by Tony Rombola and the band recorded and self-released their debut album, All Wound Up… Singles like “Keepaway” and “Whatever” helped them forge a dedicated fanbase in the New England area.
It was their signing to Universal/Republic Records in 1998 that catapulted the band into superstardom. Their self-titled, studio debut album was widely praised (and would later go on to become RIAA-certified 4x platinum), they headlined their first tour, and also made their first appearance on the Ozzfest lineup. It wasn’t until 2002 and their third studio album that current drummer Shannon Larkin joined the band and cemented what would be their permanent roster.
Through seven albums and four Grammy Award nominations, Godsmack announced in March 2020 that they were returning to the studio to write and record their eighth and final record. Their first new album since 2018, Lighting Up the Sky—which is set to be released on February 24, 2023 will end their longest gap between albums, while also possibly serving as the final chapter in their recording career. But it won’t stop there. The band is set to headline a tour starting April 21, 2023 with select shows in South America and the US, with more dates being added. Their desire to continue performing for their fans around the world means that Godsmack won’t be retiring anytime soon. In an interview with Minneapolis radio station 93X, Erna stated: “We’re gonna try to make it big and special and important, filled with all special moments that people have enjoyed over the years. And I think that’s gonna be really satisfying to us as well, ’cause it takes a lot of pressure off of us to know now we can just go out and enjoy what we do. Playing music is what we love the most — live. And it gives us more time to connect with the fans, connect with the live show and just enjoy the best part of why we do this for a living.”
AMI is excited to offer this contest to fans of Godsmack and to music fans in general. For a limited time, AMI jukeboxes will also be featuring a Godsmack playlist that highlights their biggest hits throughout the years. All are encouraged to check out the playlist and US residents may enter the contest using the AMI Music app or by visiting a nearby AMI jukebox venue.
