Green Day is one of the biggest bands in the world. During their three-decade career, they’ve sold over 85 million records and won 5 Grammys, including “Best Musical Show” for the Broadway production of American Idiot. They’re credited with generating a mainstream interest in punk rock during the 90s, ushering in the era of pop punk. Their success and innovation have inspired many other bands. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.

Green Day emerged in California’s underground punk rock scene during the late 80s and early 90s. Bandmates and co-founders Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt originally formed a band called Sweet Children in 1986. By 1989, they changed their name to Green Day and released their debut EP 1,000 Hours on the independent label Lookout! Records. The following year, they released their debut studio album, 39/Smooth. Around this time, drummer Tré Cool joined the band and became a permanent member. Their second and final album under Lookout!, 1991’s Kerplunk, is one of the bestselling indie label records of all time with over 4 million sales. The success of Kerplunk brought attention from major studio labels and Green Day signed with Reprise Records.

The trio’s breakout album and major-label debut, Dookie (1994) is widely considered the best alternative rock album of that year. Powered by the singles “Longview,” “Welcome to Paradise,” “Basketcase,” “When I Come Around,” and “She,” the album eventually reached diamond certification, selling over 20 million copies worldwide. Dookie won the 1995 Grammy for “Best Alternative Album.” The success of Dookie also helped sales for the next album, Insomniac (1995). It reached #2 on the Billboard 200 and is certified 2x platinum. The singles “Geek Stink Breath,” “Stuck with Me,” and “Brain Stew” all enjoyed moderate success as well.

Their next two albums marked a decline for the group. 1997’s Nimrod featured the single “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” which has become a staple of high school proms and graduation ceremonies. The album eventually received double platinum certification.

Green Day had a major comeback with 2004’s American Idiot. The double album is a “punk rock opera” following the antiwar hero “Jesus of Suburbia.” It was their first album to reach #1 on the Billboard 200 and won the 2005 Grammy for “Best Rock Album.” The album featured three singles to reach #1 on Billboard Alternative Songs: “American Idiot,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” and “Holiday.” The singles “Wake Me Up When September Ends” and “Jesus of Suburbia” charted high as well. “Boulevard of Broken Dream” won the Grammy for “Record of the Year.” American Idiot is certified 6x platinum and inspired a musical, which premiered in 2009.

Green Day has enjoyed fairly consistent success since American Idiot. Their eighth studio album 21st Century Breakdown (2009) was also a punk rock opera double album. Like its predecessor, it reached #1 and won the Grammy for “Best Rock Album.” In 2012, they released a trilogy of albums, ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tre!. They scored their third #1 album with 2016’s Revolution Radio. The album’s singles “Bang Bang” and “Still Breathing” each went #1 on Billboard Alternative Songs chart.

Father of All… drops today and is Green Day’s thirteenth studio album. It was preceded by the title track, released as a single in September 2019. The album’s second single “Fire, Ready, Aim” came out the following month. “Oh Yeah,” the album’s third single, was released in January. It’s the groups shortest album to date. They kick off the Hella Mega Tour with Weezer and Fall Out Boy in March.
