Joe Strummer may be best known as an original member of The Clash (1976-1986), but the work he did in the years following help cement his legacy as one of Britain’s punk pioneers. After a decade with The Clash, he entered into what he described as his “wilderness years.” Between 1986 and 1999, Strummer embarked on a solo career, dabbled in acting (Straight to Hell, Mystery Train, I Hired a Contract Killer), worked on numerous soundtracks (Sid & Nancy, Walker, Grosse Pointe Blank), produced the Pogues’ 1990 effort, Hell’s Ditch, and even toured with them as their singer after Shane McGowan’s departure in 1991.
In the mid 1990s, Strummer formed the Mescaleros. Their first album, Rock Art and the X-Ray Style was released in 1999, followed by a tour of England, Europe and North America. In 2001, Strummer and the Mescaleros signed to Hellcat Records and set out on their second tour after the release of Global a Go-Go. The band played what would be their final regular gig on Nov 22, 2002 at Liverpool Academy and Strummer played a smaller gig at a club in his hometown of Somerset, England in December of that year. Without warning, an undiagnosed heart condition caused Strummer to suffer a fatal heart attack on December 22, 2002. He was only 50 years old.
Their final album, Streetcore–which was in production at the time of Strummer’s death–was released in October of 2003. AMI is proud to offer fans the chance to relive Joe Strummer’s final phase of music through this collectible box set, which includes all 3 albums with the Mescaleros. For a limited time, AMI jukeboxes will be featuring a career-spanning playlist of his music. Everyone is encouraged to check out the playlist and US residents may enter the contest using the AMI Music app or by visiting a nearby AMI jukebox venue.
