The latest AMI contest focuses on the journey of rapper/entrepreneur, Kevin Gates. One lucky winner will receive a merchandise bundle featuring Gates’s latest album Khaza on CD, along with a Khaza hoodie and t-shirt. This giveaway runs July 22, 2022 through August 3, 2022. US residents can enter using the AMI Music app, available on iOS and Android. Contest entry is also available on any participating AMI Jukebox.

Kevin Gates grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and started making music at the age of 21. In 2012, his seventh mixtape Make Em’ Believe caught the attention of Lil Wayne’s record label, Young Money Entertainment. It was at this time that fellow rapper Birdman gave Gates the idea to start his own label, which would eventually become known as Bread Winners’ Association. The first mixtape released on the new label (The Luca Brasi Story) garnered huge praise from outlets like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone. The result of which was a deal with Atlantic Records, his first major label release–2013’s Stranger Than Fiction, and his first appearance on the Billboard charts.

The following years featured more mixtapes, more touring, a debut studio album titled Isiah in 2016 and its follow-up, I’m Him in 2019. Gates’s latest–released June 17, 2022–is called Khaza. A last-minute addition was made with the final track, “Thinking With My D*ck” (feat. Juicy J), a song originally released in 2013 that saw a resurgence in popularity and a reappearance on the charts after going viral on the social media platform, TikTok. This newfound popularity comes not long after Gates talked about how the stress of 2020 took a grueling toll on his mental health. He admitted that he seriously considered suicide at one point. Always one to be open and honest about his struggles with mental health, Kevin Gates is taking success one day at a time.
