It was 1980 in Manchester, England and guitarist/keyboardist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook, and drummer Stephen Morris were three musicians doing their best to carry on after the dissolution of their band, Joy Division, whose rise to fame ended abruptly earlier that year after the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. The new trio began to play shows before they even had a name–or a vocalist. Sumner eventually took on the role of front man and guitarist which left an opening on keyboards, to be filled by Morris’s then-girlfriend (now wife), Gillian Gilbert. A suggestion for a new name was provided by Rob Gretton, the band’s manager, who was inspired by an article about the “New Order of the Kampuchean Liberation.” Band members voted between that, and another less popular option–The Witchdoctors of Zimbabwe. Long story short, New Order won out and a new band was ready to take over the world.

Their first effort, Movement (1981) was somewhat of a crossover from Joy Division to their new sound, as a few of the songs were written prior to Curtis’s death. Their sophomore album, Power, Corruption & Lies (1983) introduced more electronic tracks and is widely considered one of the greatest British albums of the 1980s. By their third release, Low-Life (1985), New Order had increased their use of synthesizers and samplers and had firmly established a signature sound.

It’s this pivotal moment in their discography that the band are celebrating with the reissue of Low-Life. AMI is excited to offer fans the chance at winning this collectible box set, and for a limited time, AMI jukeboxes will also be featuring a playlist of New Order’s greatest hits throughout the years. Everyone is encouraged to check out the playlist and US residents may enter the contest using the AMI Music app or by visiting a nearby AMI jukebox venue.
