ZZ Top is one of the top 100 bestselling bands of all time, with 11 Gold, 7 Platinum and 3 multi-platinum records. The roots rock band originated in Houston in 1969. Since 1970, the group has consisted of frontman Billy Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard. Gibbons is the group’s main lyricist and musical arranger. Their unique musical style blends elements of blues, southern rock, hard rock and boogie rock. They are known for their signature long beards, barrelhouse rhythms, and humorous lyrics, often making use of double entendre and innuendos.
They released their debut effort, ZZ Top’s First Album, in 1971. During the 1970s, they established themselves as a top live act, while producing four more albums. The trio spent 7 straight years touring from 1970-1976. Following their “Worldwide Texas Tour” in 1976, they began a 90-day break that turned into a two-year hiatus. The band members grew their famous long beards during this extended break.
ZZ Top’s sound, and success, evolved during the 1980s. They incorporated elements of popular genres like punk rock and new wave, making use of synthesizers. This new sound helped spur the success of their 1981 album El Loco. Their next album, 1983’s Eliminator, became their best-selling album to date. It produced the hit singles “Legs,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’.” “Got Me Under Pressure,” and “Sharp Dressed Men.” The music videos for these singles got regular rotation on MTV. “Legs” won the MTV Music Video Award for “Best Group Video” and “Sharp Dressed Men” won for Best Direction.
Their next album, 1985’s Afterburner, didn’t sell as much as Eliminator, but is their highest charting album, peaking at #4 on the Billboard 200. In 1990, they released Recycler, the final album in their distinct sonic trilogy. During the 1990s, the band returned to their guitar-driven, southern rock style, which could be heard on there next four albums Antenna, Rhythmeen, XXX, and Mescalero. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. They released their 15th studio album La Futura in 2012. Blending their classic style with modern recording techniques, it received critical acclaim and commercial success. ZZ Top is currently on tour for their 50th anniversary.
The Goin’ 50 box set offers a half century’s worth of the band’s top material. The 50-track set includes two live recordings and an additional two bonus tracks on 5 vinyl LPs. The Prize Pack is a must have for ZZ Tops fans and music lovers alike. AMI is proud to offer this music contest and great giveaway.
